You may have been diagnosed with one of the following disorders:

  • Aphasia or Cognitive communication disorder following a stroke or TBI
  • Progressive neurological disorder (e.g. Parkinson's, MS, MND, PSA, Huntington's)
  • Voice disorder
  • Stammer (acquired or developmental)
  • Encephalitis
  • Brain tumours (malignant or benign)
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
  • Globus

What is involved in the assessment?

The aim of an assessment is to get to know you and find out more about the difficulties you are experiencing. A case history will be taken to find out whether you have a formal diagnosis and the impact of this on your voice, speech, language and/or swallowing ability. This may involve administering some formal tests or even looking at your muscles and nerves controlling your voice speech and swallowing and seeing how they operate.

Assessment times can vary from anything between 45minutes to 2 hours (split over 2 sessions). It will depend on the severity and complexity of your condition. We can normally talk to you about our initial impression at the end of the assessment, and advise you about whether therapy is indicated. A more formal report will follow within 10 days of your assessment.

What is involved in therapy?

Therapy will depend on your difficulty. Sometimes therapy may be needed more than once a week if it is felt that you will benefit from higher intensity input. This may be the case, for example, if you have aphasia. Therapy sessions last between 30 minutes and one hour depending on your difficulty. At the end of the session you will be given home practice to maintain progress between therapy sessions. We aim to train parents and carers to carry out the home practice, and we are available by email or telephone to assist with any queries outside of therapy sessions.
